How to Remove a Background by Color
Clicking a plain or clearly separated background selects connected pixels with a similar color. Review the red overlay, adjust tolerance, or add more locations, then download the transparent PNG. This is not AI subject recognition, so detailed hair, shadows, gradients, and backgrounds similar to the subject can be difficult to separate cleanly.
Select the background by color
Click the background you want to remove to select pixels with a similar color. By default, the selection stays within the area connected to the clicked point. Turn off the contiguous option to select matching colors across the entire image, and review the red overlay before using the result.
Adjust tolerance and review the selection
A lower tolerance stays closer to the clicked color, while a higher value includes a wider range. Lower it if the red overlay reaches the subject. This works best for products, logos, and other images with plain backgrounds; hair, shadows, translucent edges, gradients, and similar foreground colors are harder to separate. This tool does not use AI to detect the subject automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Image decoding, color selection, and transparent PNG creation all run in your browser. The source and result are not stored on a server or in a database.
What images work best?
It works best with simple backgrounds and clear color separation, such as product photos on white, scanned graphics, and logos.
How should I adjust color tolerance?
Raise it when too little background is selected, and lower it when the subject is included. The setting applies to the next click, and Undo Last Selection can revert it.
What does contiguous area only mean?
When enabled, only similar pixels connected to the clicked point are selected. Turn it off to select similar colors across the whole image.
Does it automatically remove complex photo backgrounds?
No. This tool selects pixels by color rather than recognizing a subject with AI. A professional editor is better for hair or complex backgrounds.
Why is the result downloaded as PNG?
JPEG cannot store transparency, so the result uses PNG to preserve transparent pixels.
