Characters are counted as UTF-16 code units
The character count and 1,000,000-character input limit use JavaScript's UTF-16 code units. One visible character does not always equal one unit: 가 and A each count as 1, 😀 as 2, and the joined emoji 👩💻 as 5. An e followed by a combining accent, displayed as é, counts as 2.
The count without spaces removes tabs, line breaks, and other JavaScript whitespace as well as ordinary spaces. Blank lines count as lines. The browser normalizes pasted CRLF and CR line endings to LF in the text area.

Line breaks contribute to the character count in this example. Words are whitespace-separated chunks, not language-aware tokens. Sentence counts use ending punctuation, so abbreviations and decimal numbers can be split too often.
