Why proportions and change differ
Part ÷ total × 100 describes a current share, while dividing the difference between the new and previous values by the absolute value of the previous value, then multiplying by 100, describes change. Use the proportion mode for response rates, discount shares, and conversion rates.
The baseline for percentage change
Percentage change uses the previous value as its baseline: moving from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase, while moving from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease. When the previous value is zero, an ordinary percentage change is undefined, so compare the absolute difference as well.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
A change from 10% to 15% is a 5-percentage-point difference, but a 50% increase relative to the earlier 10% rate.
Why cannot the total or previous value be zero?
Division by zero is undefined. In particular, a move from zero to another value cannot be expressed by one ordinary percentage-change value.
